The Vaikunta Baliga College of Law was declared open by the then Labour Minister Sri. B.Vaikunta Baliga on 11 th May 1957. The College began with an enrollment of 86 students.

The college was originally known as Udupi Law College and functioned from an old building near Ajjarkadu, Udupi.Later, to cater to the growing students strength and accommodation demands of the students, the college was shifted to another spacious premises. The foundation stone for the new building in the new campus at Kunjibettu was laid by Hon'ble Mr.Justice V.S.Malimath, the then Chief Justice of Karnataka Highcourt and the building in the new campus at Kunjibettu, Udupi, was inaugurated on 29th August 1987 by Hon'ble Mr.Justice R.S.Pathak, the then Chief Justice of India. The management renamed the college as Vaikunta Baliga College of Law in the fond memory of the great legal luminary and efficient statesman, the Late Sri B.Vaikunta Baliga ,the then Minister of Law in the Government of Mysore.The tablet renaming the college was unveiled by Justice Sri K.S.Hegde, former Judge, Supreme Court of India. The College has celebrated its Silver Jubilee in March 1982 and celebrates its Golden Jubilee in the academic year 2006-07.

The college has rendered yeoman service in the field of legal education. About 5,500 law graduates have so far left the portals of the college after getting their law degrees. Many of our alumni are now occupying high positions in public life as Judges, Lawyers, Bank Executives etc. Hon’ble Mr. Justice P.Vishwanath Shetty of Karnataka Highcourt is a proud alumni of our college.

Dr.T.M.A.Pai, our founder, was a great visionary. The institutions founded by him lived up to the great expectations. Today, these institutions have been recognised throughout the world for their excellence.
